Long weekend picnics at Seawinds Gardens – Mornington Peninsula

The charming Seawinds Gardens, located on the top of Arthurs Seat, are a hidden gem of the Mornington Peninsula. While many people venture from Melbourne for day trips to Portsea, Dromana, Red Hill wineries and more, this beautiful little park is often overlooked. Situated at the peak of Arthurs Seat, and a few minutes up the road from the popular ‘The Eagle’ chairlift, Seawinds is the perfect spot for a relaxed walk, or a picnic.

With the long weekend in Melbourne, we took the opportunity to have a fun little picnic in the gardens. Autumn is upon us in Australia and the leaves had already begun to pop in colour, creating a perfect platform for some of the beautiful happy snaps seen below. Take a look at some of our shots, and a few tips if visiting the gardens. We have also included a list to our Mornington Peninsula guides and itineraries below!

A few things to consider when visiting Seawinds Gardens in Arthurs Seat:

  • Pack a picnic! Seawinds is perfect for a picnic. Sit under the shade of the native or deciduous trees and enjoy the beauty of the park.
  • Bring your camera! Seawinds is very picturesque! In particular, the line of trees flanking the entrance (both the pines, and the deciduous trees) make excellent spots for happy snaps!
  • Buy your picnic treats before you get to Arthurs Seat. There’s not many shops at the peak of Arthurs Seat (there are amazing views!). Venture through Red Hill (think wineries, orchards and more, or down to Dromana to grab some picnic supplies before you get there!
  • Respect the environment. Seawinds Gardens are national parks, and as such, we strongly encourage you to respect the environment, follow the rules (no fires etc) and take your rubbish home.
  • Make it a day trip! Add in some more amazing stops. Consider visiting Red Hill wineries, Epicurean for lunch, get a coffee from Dromana, and much more! Our guides below have all our top picks and recommendations!
  • Enjoy the views! Seawinds Gardens has some of the best viewpoints of Port Phillip Bay. Walk the length of the park to reach the view points!
  • Facilities: There are toilets at the park, however there aren’t many rubbish bin facilites, so please take your rubbish home!
  • Opening Hours: The gates are open 8am-5pm (hours may vary) for car parking however you can easily walk into the park before/after this time without parking in there. There is no entry fee to Seawinds Gardens (we love free things!).
