The Lofoten Islands are one of the most picturesque regions in the world. Located in the remote northern reaches of Norway, they were a bucket list destination for us. We visited in summer 2024, enjoying the incredible hikes, phenomenal views, postcard towns and the overall Scandi summer vibes. One of the best things to do on the Lofoten Islands is hire a car and day trip to all of the small fishing villages. While popular towns like Hennisvaer and Reine catch most of the headlines, there are many others to check out. The focus of this guide is on the picturesque town of Nusfjord, located in the central part of Loften. You can also see our guide to what towns you should visit in Lofoten Islands here. Read on for a few tips, our impression of if it’s worth the detour, and some shots of the little town.
So should you visit Nusfjord?
In short, we think so! While it’s not a ‘must visit’ like Henningsvaer or Reine, we rated the little town quite highly and think it should be on your Lofoten Islands road trip.
The well preserved fishing town of Nusfjord feels more like an open air museum than a town. The only thing stopping Nusfjord being a must visit is the fact it costs 100NOK per person to enter the town (yes you have to pay to enter Nusfjord). However, we think this cost was worth it.
We visited for a day trip and enjoyed the cute brightly painted yellow and red buildings. The café, Landhandleriet Café, makes one of the best coffee’s in Lofoten, and is a must visit when you stop at Nusfjord.
Additionally, the tiny bakery is always busy delivering great pastries. You can easily spend an hour or 2 wandering the town, getting a coffee and checking out the old fishing village history. There’s also a few restaurants which we didn’t check out (we visited earlier in the day), and a number of traditional Rorbu accommodation options that can be booked to stay the night (see Nusfjord accommodation here).
So should you visit Nusfjord? The answer is yes! Nusfjord is well positioned on the way down Lofoten, and we think the detour is worth it!
