Venture to the northern reaches of Europe and you will stumble upon one of the most naturally beautiful locations in the world.. the Lofoten Islands. This little archipelago is home to a plethora of fishing villages and has become popular for outdoor adventure activities in the summer and the northern lights in winter. Situated within the arctic circle, this part of Norway should be on everyone’s bucket list. You can see our complete Lofoten road trip guide here.
One of the unique Lofoten attractions are the spectacular arctic beaches. Bright white sand beaches are flanked with spectacular mountains. The water is incredibly clear, and the settings look like they are from a postcard. Many of the beaches offer camping options, and some of the best beaches even require a hike to reach them. While we encourage you to have a ‘bucket list’ swim in the arctic waters, don’t expect them to be warm. Due to the proximity of the Lofoten Islands, the water will be very cold, even in summer. Read on for a list of the best beaches on the Lofoten Islands including some of our favourites!
THE BEST LOFOTEN ISLAND BEACHES YOU MUST VISIT:
- Skagsanden beach – This gorgeous beach is one of our favourites. The sand is a bright white, and the beach is home to sweeping views. In summer wildflowers grown on the fringes, and you can also camp or get a meal at popular Lofoten Beach Camp. It is a Lofoten Islands must visit.
- Unstad Beach: Known as the best place for arctic surfing on Lofoten, this beach is worth visiting and offers a unique attraction in an area full of incredible highlights.
- Haukland Beach – Make time to visit one of the most picturesque beaches in Norway (and maybe the world). Haukland beach is truly a must visit! Situated in the central Lofoten region, this beach is flanked by mountains, and offers crystal clear, calm waters.
- Uttakleiv Beach – Another top pick, Uttakleive is located just up the road from Haukland. Home to friendly sheep and spectacular views, Uttakleiv is the perfect location for watching the bucket list midnight sun!
- Rørvikstranda – Located on the fringe of Henningsvaer, this is another beautiful beach worth stopping for! Often popular with tours, don’t let the crowds stop you. Arrive early/late to beat the crowds.
- Vikten beach – Often not the ‘first picked’, this is a great option if wanting to beat the crowds.
- Rambergstranda – A wide white sandy beach that is definitely worth visiting. Situated in the heart of Lofoten and near the Ramberg bridges/town, this is another great stop on your road trip.
- Bunes Beach – An incredibly picturesque beach reached via ferry from Reine. Harder to reach but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put the effort into getting there.
- Vik Beach – Another gorgeous arctic beach located in central Lofoten.
- Gimsøya – A series of gorgeous little beaches worth stopping the car for!
- Eggum – One of the most popular beaches for watching the midnight sun in summer!
There are other beaches located all around this islands, but these are a few of the top picks you should consider visiting on your Lofoten Islands road trip (see our guide below for more recommendations).
