The midnight sun is a unique, bucket list phenomenon that occurs in arctic circle destinations during summer months. The Lofoten Islands are located in the far northern reaches of Norway, and experiences the midnight sun between around end of May to mid July (June and start of July = best time for this). During this time period, the sun does not set at all, leading to daylight at midnight.. hence the ‘midnight sun’. This provides unforgettable summer nights, and is a must do when you visit Lofoten Islands.
Where should you go to see the midnight sun on the Lofoten Islands? Due to the geography of the Lofoten Islands, there are certain places that will be better and worse to witness this phenomenon. Typically, the northern beaches, towns and hikes will offer better views, while popular towns of Henningsvaer and Reine will not have great positions to experience the midnight sun. We headed to the picturesque beach of Uttakleiv Strand, located near Haukland. This provided the perfect vantage point for an incredible evening and experience we will remember for the rest of our lives. While we had planned on doing a hike to see the midnight sun, this didn’t eventuate due to our itinerary, fatigue from previous hikes, and the weather.
We list a few great locations to see the midnight sun below.
- Uttakleiv Strand Beach. Located near Haukland. There’s a wide beach, grassy spots to sit and beautiful views.
- Skagsanden beach at Flakstad. Home to the popular Lofoten Beach Camp. A great spot.
- Kvalvika Beach. This requires a hike to get down there, but the setting is incredible.
