The little seaside town of Omis, situated along the stunning Croatian coastline, was one of our stops when we visited in 2022. Located around 30 minutes south of Split, nestled into the mountains and right on the coast, this town was visually impressive. We stayed for a couple of nights, and enjoyed the calmer nature of Omis compared to some of the crazy busy towns along the Riviera. While Omis isn’t the perfect spot for everyone, it definitely is one of the Croatian towns along the coastline that is worth considering when you visit. Read on for a few of our thoughts about Omis, and check out our detailed guides for many other locations we visited along in Croatia.
A few things to consider if you visit Omis
- Overall, Omis has a more relaxed feel, more of a ‘local’ feel, with a lot of Croatians heading here on holidays. This was a nice contrast to the western influx in other parts of Croatia.
- The town is visually impressive. Think a small town backed onto the mountains. There are cute old narrow streets, and big river, soaring mountains and great views. Additionally, we found Omis to be filled with beautiful bright Bougainvillea.
- The best beach in Omiš wasn’t the ‘main beach’. We found the main beach to have quite cloudy water, but enjoyed heading left of the old town – around Beach Brzet – for clearer water and less people.
- How to get to Omis? It’s an easy 30mins south from Split by bus (16kn bus ride) or a similar drive. However, be prepared that during summer, the busses are often delayed, and may be quite busy if you are looking to get on from Split down to Makarska or Dubrovnik. Book your ticket in advance and be prepared to wait.
- Want to exercise while in Omis? We found an awesome gym which we visited every day called Joker Omis (75kn for a session).
- If you want to do more than just relax on the beach there are lots of adventure activities for those wanting – e.g. zipline, water rafting, water sports etc. We didn’t try these but the area is well know for this. There are also hikes, but during the peak of summer if may get a little too hot.
Want to stay in Omis?
We stayed a few nights in Omis and enjoyed the change of pace. Is it a must visit, no.. but was it a unique town right on the beach with a more local feel.. yes. We stayed in a cute AirBnb guesthouse boasting stunning terrace views of the coastline and great for sunset. You can check it out here, however, be prepared that it is a 10-15 minute walk up a hill from the town, and during summer with luggage this can be quite the effort. We have included a few other good options closer to the town to check out below or click here if interested:
- A beautiful apartment right near the beach in Omis.
- An excellently located apartment in Omis.
- An apartment in excellent location.
How long should you stay in Omis? Well.. it depends. If you’re heading there with family and want to just relax by the beach, you may stay longer, but otherwise, we think a 1-3 day stay is a perfect addition to your Croatian coastline adventures.
