Things you MUST DO when you visit the Jungfrau region

The mountainous Jungfrau region in Switzerland is one of our favourite places in Europe. Offering ‘world best’ mountain views and hikes, the it is also known for its picturesque towns of Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Murren, Interlaken, Wengen and more. We visited in September 2022, enjoying a delightful 5 day stay filled with hikes, exploring towns, cable car rides, picnics and more. Take a look below at our recommendations for the things you just can’t miss out on doing when you visit the region!

A few things you MUST DO when you visit the Jungfrau region

Hike:

This is the obvious, and the main drawcard for many visiting this region! The hiking in the Jungfrau region offers a multitude of easy to hard options, all delivering exceptional views. We hiked every day, completing many of the popular options around the region. See more on our favourite and recommended hikes here!

Have a picnic with a view:

With views as good as you find in the Jungfrau region, it would be rude to not stop and enjoy them. We loved having a picnic and soaking up these incredible views. Our favourite spots to stop for a picnic were in the Lauterbrunnen Valley (head a few kms down from the town for areas you can sit on the grass) and at the lake near Kleine Scheidegg.

Visit the towns:

The region has a multitude of towns dotted in the valleys, beside the lakes, and on the mountains. We visited Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Murren, Interlarken, Gimmelwald and more during our visit. Whilst we recommend visiting as many as you can, our favourites in no particular order were:

  • Wengen: situated on the mountain, this is the perfect spot to stay when you visit (we did, see here)
  • Murren: located on the mountain opposite Wengen, Murren had a slower pace, incredible views, and good cafes.
  • Grindelwald: when comparing Grindelwald vs Lauterbrunnen, the former was our favourite.

Have a drink with a view:

With so many good views, stopping at a bar, restaurant, or packing a traveller for your hike is a must. The bars situated up the top of the mountains in locations such as Grindelwald First offer excellent views, however sitting at one of the many benches along the hikes and kicking back is also an excellent option.

Relax:

We both found the mountains and stunning nature very relaxing. Whether it was the lack of noise, people and technology on the mountains, or the stillness in the air, we both felt very calm when hiking. Take some time to enjoy this feeling when you are up on the mountains.

Take a cable car:

Catch one of the many cable cars up the mountain, soaking in the views and the unique experience! Whilst expensive, we loved catching these tiny cable cars up! If you plan of catching a lot of the public transport during your stay, consider getting the Jungfrau pass (see more here)

Have a swim in the lakes:

This isn’t for the faint of heart, however it is a moment we will remember. Ky and his brother jumped into the crystal clear waters of Lake Oeschinen after our hike. The water was freezing cold, but so refreshing!

Note: we don’t advise you to swim if you are not a strong swimmer and take no responsibility for any injuries or incidents that occur as a result of swimming.

Take a few photos:

Take a few, or in our case, take a lot! The whole region is ridiculously picturesque. We regularly had to stop taking photos and prioritise just ‘enjoying the moment’ with our ‘eye cameras’. However, be prepared for lots of photos as you continually are amazing by view after incredible view.

Say hi to the cows:

You will hear them before you see them. The ringing bells of the cows echo around the valley and provide a soundtrack to your hikes. Whilst you are likely to walk past a cow or 2 on your hikes, the best place to see them up close is likely the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Wander the rolling green hills:

The green hills the cover the mountains and valleys are so ‘quintessential Switzerland’. They also offer a wonderful place to explore or sit for a picnic (see above). Our favourite places to wander through rolling green hills was on the outskirts of Wengen, Grindelwald valley, Lauterbrunnen Valley, and on the walk down from Murren to Gimmelwald.

Whilst this list is not exhaustive, it is a few of the things we think you MUST DO when you visit the Jungfrau region. If you think we have missed any of the amazing experiences in this area, please comment below!

Maybe next time I need to plan a Switzerland trip when it’s a little warmer and not when the temp is in the negatives because I was miserable and freezing when I went!!

You should! Summer is a beautiful time! Weather was amazing when we went in September also. Spring is supposed to be good for the waterfalls also.

I went to Lauterbrunnen a couple winters ago (I have a lot of travel backlog to write about) and it was so freezing the water from waterfalls would turn into snow before hitting the ground 😅
