After a few months without a trip, we were due a getaway! While not the usually Europe summer we are accustomed to at this time of year, a long weekend in Sydney was just the tonic we needed to refresh. With the trip centered around Ky competing in the Sydney marathon, his first marathon, we planned a day either side, making it a long weekend in one of Australia’s most picturesque big cities.

The marathon was an amazing experience! The Sydney city and people came out to support the elite runners (including none other Eliud Kipchoge) and get around the recreational ones (like Ky!). Known for a challenging hilly course, Ky was stoked with his marathon debut effort of 3 hours and 8 minutes (03:08.08). Tess has the job of being the support team, something she took to with gusto. Her hand drawn signs got a lot of attention from the crowds, and she definitely helped Ky get over the line!
A few tips for those travelling to Sydney for the Sydney Marathon:
- Stay near a train station (ideally on the north side of the bridge near the start line).
- Get there at least 1 day before, but even going up on the Friday to allow you time to scope out the transport, the city, and pick up your bib might be advisable.
- Public transport is excellent.. if you’re staying near it (see above). Busses and ubers weren’t running/reliable during the race period due to road closures.
- The course is very hilly, challenging, but rewarding! Soak it up!

The rest of the time spend in Sydney was intentionally relaxing. We soaked up the winter sun (20+ degrees) from the northern side of the harbour. The views of the iconic harbour bridge and opera house are iconic, and it’s well worth a ferry trip across to enjoy the walk and views.

We also ventured down to Coogee Beach, situated 20-30minutes from the heart of the town. This is one of the well known beaches (the most iconic being Bondi). While Ky’s post marathon legs didn’t have it in them to walk the beautiful train between Bondi and Coogee, we did enjoy the sun, check out the local coffee shops, and relax for a few hours before our flight home.

If you’ve been thinking about a little weekend getaway, let this be the inspiration you need!
