This sandbar island is one of the best travel experiences we have had recently!

isla holbox sandbar island punta mosquito should i visit things to do day trip mexico cancun

During your stay on Isla Hobox make sure you allocate a morning to walk along the Island’s natural sandbar. Starting from the Holbox Pier, turn right and walk along the beach until you can’t go any further on the sand. This should take around 30-40minutes. From here, wade out until you’re standing in the middle of the Island’s natural sand bar. Here, you’ll have the chance to take in some of the clearest water on the island as well as squeaky clean sand and surprisingly fewer tourists than we would have expected. We would recommend heading out early in the day (approx. 8am) one to beat the heat, and also to avoid getting stuck out there when the tide decides to come in. Having said that, the water only got to waist height for us meaning we were easily able to carry our belongings with us without risking them getting wet.

While we were pretty happy pausing halfway along the sandbank to take some incredible photos (real desktop background level stuff) and have a swim, you can continue walking out towards Punta Mosquito. Beyond this part of the beach is a protected wildlife reserve – we didn’t get the chance to head out there, but it could be worthwhile looking into booking a tour if you want to increase your chances of seeing Flamingos in their natural habitat. For those not keen on the walk down the beach, the boat tours will often stop at the sandbar Punta Mosquito as part of their journey.. however we thoroughly enjoyed and encourage the walk!
