The Scandinavian city of Copenhagen was a delightful stop on our European adventures. One of the highlights of our time in Denmark’s capital was the vibrant food markets. These bustling streets and squares offered delicious and varied cuisine at reasonable prices. For those visiting Copenhagen, we recommend visiting these food markets which we rate as some of the best in Europe (maybe the world).
Reffen Food Market Copenhagen
Reffen is the crown jewel of Copenhagen’s food markets. Situated in the Refshaleøen district, this urban food market is a must visit. Nestled in an industrial area right on the water, the market is made up of brightly decorated shipping containers, wooden decks, hanging lights, street art, and outdoor seating everywhere. The food is incredible, with diverse offerings ranging from traditional Danish hotdogs, to Mexican, Afghani, Moroccan and more!
Must try!
- Nordic Hotdog: The traditional Danish hotdog is something you must try when visiting Copenhagen. Nordic hotdog delivered probably the best hotdog we have ever tried!
- Maroc Maroc: Try the chicken pastilla! Great flavours and the accompanying hummus and beetroot were excellent!
How to get to Reffen: Catch the 2A Bus which runs past the Copenhagen Central Train Station and Tivoli Gardens, and along the river near the Christiansborg Palace. It should take around 20 minutes depending on where you jump on from. Alternatively, Reffen is only around 6kms from the iconic Nyhavn harbour, making it perfect from cycling (or walking).
Tivoli Food Hall Copenhagen
This central food market is situated right next to the iconic Tivoli Gardens and the Copenhagen train station. Offering an excellent selection of tasty food, it’s worth a visit! Grab some food and head outside (weather permitting) to the deck which sits adjacent to Tivoli Gardens.
Must try!
- Hallernes Smørrebrød: The traditional Danish open sandwich known as Smørrebrød is a must try when you visit. Many of the restaurants will offer Smørrebrød, so you will have lots to try! The options we tried at Hallernes Smørrebrød were flavourful and excellent portions.
How to get to Tivoli Food Hall: Hard to miss. Sitting adjacent to the Tivoli Gardens and opposite the train station.
TorvehallernKBH Copenhagen
This trendy food market is situated just out of the main town, but still very central. Nearby the Ørstedsparken, Peblinge So waterways, and Nørreport train station, TorvehallernKBH isn’t hard to reach. Offering a variety of eateries, deli-style options, wine bars and great coffee, it’s worth checking out!
Must try!
- Coffee Collective: The coffee at Coffee Collective was one of the best in Copenhagen (and in Europe!). However, the star of the show was the lemon flavoured pastry we tried. The oddly shaped pastry was incredibly flavoured and worth trying!
How to get to TorvehallernKBH: Head to Nørreport train station via the easy to use Copenhagen metro system.
Broens Gadekøkken Copenhagen
The outdoor space of Broens Gadekøokken is situated right on the river in Christianshavn. A series of food vendors in shipping containers offer up great eats at reasonable prices. The location is central, nearby Nyhavn and Freetown Cristiania, making it an ideal stop as you traverse the city.
Must try!
- Simple Feast: This vegetarian friendly food stall offered an excellent fried tofu salad! This meal was one of the better vegetarian ones we have had on our trip, and the portions were very generous.
How to get to Broens Gadekøkken: Head across the Inderhavnsbroen bridge. The location is only 5 minutes walk from the famous Nyhavn, so it’s not hard to get there by foot (or bicycle).
