Arrowtown in Autumn is truly spectacular – add this to your Queenstown itinerary

should i visit arrowtown historic autumn hidden gem queenstown road trip new zealand

Arrowtown was a frequent recommendation and something that popped up on Queenstown guides online! We are here to tell you it’s worth visiting! We were in Queenstown over late April, meaning this coincided with autumn.. lucky us! Arrowtown might be one of the most spectacular places to experience autumn in the world.. we’re not kidding. The entire town is bursting with colour, and the hill the rises behind Arrowtown is carpeted in deciduous trees giving the illusion of it ‘catching fire’. Autumn in Arrowtown is something we’d love everyone to experience, so if you happen to be there around this time of year make sure to add it to your list! We’ve detailed a couple of considerations and things to do when you visit Arrowtown below.

How long do you need to spend in Arrowtown?

The charming town is tiny, filled with restored old buildings and quaint streets. While some guides online talk about visiting for a night, we think you only need 2-4 hours in Arrowtown. The views and relaxed exploring with take up some time, and then add in a stop at one of the many great cafes (see below). Don’t miss a stop at Fergbutcher (see below) or Lake Hayes while you’re in the area!

Enjoy the great café’s in Arrowtown

We sampled some excellent coffee in Arrowtown at Wolf Coffee Roasters. There were also a few other café’s in the main street that were well reviewed and filled with people. Definitely a must do in a cute town like Arrowtown.

Don’t miss getting a Fergburger at Fergbutcher

The famous Fergburger is so popular in Queenstown you can be known to wait hours. Well.. what if we told you there’s a way to get the same famous burgers without the wait.. in Arrowtown? Head 5minutes up the road from the main town to Fergbutcher, located in the industrial area. You’re likely to wait no more than 15-20 minutes (maybe less if not busy) for one of the tasty burgers. It’s a must do experience when in Queenstown.

Enjoy the view from Memorial Hill in Arrowtown

One of the best views in Arrowtown is located only 5 minutes out of town. Walk up to Memorial Hill and enjoy the spectacular views, something which was incredible during our visit with the autumn leaves exploding with colour.

Grab a pie from the Arrowtown bakery

There’s something about country towns and bakery pies that we just can’t get enough of. We sampled a lamb and mint pie from the Arrowtown Bakery and definitely recommend a visit.

And more in Arrowtown?

Enjoy the vibe of the town, walk the sleepy streets, and check out the trails or hikes along the fringes of the town. You’re nearby Lake Hayes, close to wineries like Kinross (highly recommend) and only a short drive from Queenstown.
