6 great things to do in Byron Bay

byron bay things to do guide

Byron Bay, one of the most relaxed places in Australia, is a cute beachside town we have visited multiple times. While it is a great spot to stop, relax and recharge, there’s also a lot of things to do! We list 5 of our favourite things to do in Byron, along with referencing our complete Byron Bay guide.

5 great things to do when you visit Byron Bay!

1. Wategos beach:

Wategos is the best beach in Byron Bay (in our opinion). Located a few kilometers from Byron Bay town, it is easily accessible by walking (30-45mins) or driving/Uber (5-10mins). Think white sand beach sitting below the iconic lighthouse. Surfers carve up the gentle rolling waves. And a boardwalk snakes around the beach giving little views through the palm trees of crystal clear water. Stay for a few hours, or spend the day. It’s our top thing to do in Byron Bay and a must every time we visit!

2. Live music on the hill at main beach:

Walk to the end of the main street in Byron Bay, past the Beach Hotel, and you will reach a grassy area filled with locals and tourists alike sitting, sunbaking, or just enjoying the vibe. Located at the main beach in Byron Bay, this little parkland area is often where local buskers and musicians will perform. One of our favourite things to do in Byron Bay is head down in the afternoon, enjoy golden hour, and listen to some amazing live music, often with take-away of a beverage in hand. It is a must-do experience in Byron Bay!

3. Chase waterfalls:

We love a good waterfall, and due to the tropical nature of the climate around Byron Bay, there’s a few around to explore. Our favourite is Killen Falls, located around 30 minutes drive inland and south from Byron Bay. You can swim under the falls, and it’s a only a short walk from the carpark to the waterfall. There’s also a number of other great waterfalls near Byron that we haven’t visit as yet.. but one for a future trip! These include Protestors Falls, Minyon Falls, Goonengerry Falls, Marom Creek Falls, Whian Whian Falls and Haning Rock Falls.

4. The boardwalk to the lighthouse:

The boardwalk and promenade that stretches from the surf club at the heart of town, up to the iconic Byron Bay Lighthouse, is a must when you visit! The walk itself can take over an hour (~3.5kms one way), and definitely has some hills/stairs, so be prepared. The views are awesome, and we recommend stopping along the way to see The Pass (iconic surf spot with lookout), Wategos Beach (best beach in Byron), and of course the iconic Lighthouse. We have also found it a great trail for a run, but be prepared for you legs to burn on the inclines! Bring a camera as the views will be stunning!

5. Surf the iconic waves!

Surfing at Byron Bay is iconic. From the famous ‘The Pass’, to the calm rolling waves of Wategos Beach, there are so many amazing surf spots for all levels of surfers in Byron. While many bring their own boards on holiday, the stores in town will often hire out for your stay, and many of the accommodation options will also like allow you to borrow some boards. It’s an iconic and must do things in Byron, but be prepared for busy waves a peak hour, especially at The Pass! If you’re not a surfer, consider just perching at the lookout near The Pass and watch the pros at work.

6. Enjoy the hospitality scene:

Byron Bay has an amazing hospitality scene, catering to all types of tastes and preferences! We loved the Asian fusion, cute wine bars, Mediterranean cuisine, Mexican cantinas and of course the amazing cafes! The list below covers off a few of our top picks for your visit to Byron Bay.

  • Folk Cafe – Amazing cafe with great brunch/lunch options just outside the main town. Health/vegan concious.
  • Bang Bang – An upbeat and fancy Asian fusion restaurant that ranks close to the top of our list. Great food, excellent vibes! Book in advance!
  • The Mez Club – A top spot for a wine, tapas, or a full meal! Great in warm weather by the window, or in cooler weather by the first!
  • Japonaise Kitchen – Authentic Japanese food tucked in a tiny little restaurant.. sign us up! It can get busy, and close early, but it’s worth visiting!
  • Miss Margaritas – Top spot for cocktails and Mexican that brings the vibe. Head for happy hour!
  • Bay Leaf Cafe – One of the best coffee’s and brunch locations in town! A great vibe and service also adds to the experience.
