Sicily, you’re mesmerizing, diverse, and steeped in history, making us fall in love with you over and over again! We have now visited twice, and can easily envisage a world where we return again! With a past shaped by Greek, Roman, Arab, and Norman influences, this island is a living museum of extraordinary treasures. Wander through the picturesque old towns, marvel at the historic ruins scattered in every town, and lose yourself in the vibrant markets of cities like Palermo. This guide will ignite your wanderlust and help you uncover some of the must-see gems of Sicily, but it’s just the beginning and hopefully sparks your enthusiasm to investigate further!

So why Sicily over other destinations in Italy? Well.. it depends on your interests. Sicily represents a perfect destination if you’re looking for great food, a variety of history, friendly locals, southern Italian charm, great beaches and so much more! The time of year you visit Sicily is also really important in our view! We view this southern Italian island as the perfect ‘shoulder season’ destination. The heat in the peak of summer can reach high 30s, which can sometimes become unbearable. However in the ‘shoulder season’ of May, June, and September represent the best time to get warm, clear days that are perfect for prolonging summer.

5 destinations in Sicily that you must visit!

Taormina:

The most well known town in Sicily is definitely worth a visit. While tourists have been visiting for years to enjoy the long summers, great food, beautiful food and great culture, Taormina has exploded in popularity thanks to White Lotus (wildly popular Netflix Series) which has a season filmed here. Expect Taormina to be a little more touristy than other towns in Sicily, however we found this to be ‘bearable’, particularly if you visit in ‘shoulder season’. There’s ancient ruins, cable cars down to the beach, stunning views, and thebest arancini we tried in Italy! Check out our guide and highlights from the charming town of Taormina here.

Cefalù:

This delightful little town, situated on the northern coast of Sicily, is one of our favourite locations in Italy! Think relaxed summer days, beautiful harbour and beach, vibrant little old town, and great local food! Cefalu is the perfect spot for a short visit, or a slower stay (like our one week visit). We have put together a complete guide to the charming town of Cefalu here!

Syracuse:

The historic Syracuse is another spot that should be on your list. This coastal Mediterranean gem boasts the captivating ruins of the Greek Theatre and the enchanting charm of Ortigia Island. The old town is situated in the historic Ortigia Island, and the beaches surrounding the town are ‘Insta worthy’. Located around 1 hour south of Catania, it’s an easy and excellent addition to your Sicily visit!

Palermo:

Famous for history, authentic culture and incredible food, Palermo deserves a spot on the list of anyone considering a Sicily holiday! Considered the cultural, economic and touristic capital of Sicily, Palermo has a rich history of varied influences and conquests. Come for the food, stay for the local charm. There’s also an airport making it an excellent entry or exit point in Sicily. See our visit and guide to Palermo here!

Trapani:

The historic town of Trapani looks like a postcard, and is seriously picturesque. It is also the gateway to the popular Aegadian Islands. The historic port is home to fisherman with great seafood, the nearby beaches are picturesque, and the views from the hilltop are excellent. While it might not the be the ‘top of the list’ option when you search up Sicilian destinations, we urge you to add Trapani to your itinerary.

Consider:
  • Messina or Catania – These cities are brimming with atmosphere, history and culture. A great addition to your Sicily visit! See our little stop in Messina here.
  • The inland town of Ragusa – This is a little hidden gem in Sicily that many often skip in search of more popular coastal towns. Come for beautiful views and great history.
  • Islands off Sicily like Ustica, Aeolian Islands or Aegadian Islands – This is where the Italians go to escape the tourists! Think more authentic, calmer beaches and overall underrated experiences!
