Romania’s stunning region of Transylvania provided us with some of the most picturesque stops on our travels to date. The snaking Transfagarasan Highway coupled with rugged mountain tops, gushing waterfalls and stunning views of the valley below was an amazing spectacle – it’s no surprise this road is considered one of the most beautiful in the world! This 150km stretch of road is nestled into a portion of the Carpathian Mountains and reaches elevation of over 2000 metres. We visited in late August, which is the perfect time to visit, as the road is only open fully between June to October due to snowfall.
Be prepared for crowds at the major stops at the base and top of the road. We recommend finding a park along the highway just below the top. This gives you a good base to wander the valley, check out the highway, or visit Lake Balea. Additionally, you could stop at the bottom of the highway at the Balea Waterfall carpark and catch the cable car up to the top.
How to get to the Transfagarasan Highway?
The Transfagarsan Highway is located around 1.5-2 hours from major Transylvania towns of Brasov and Sibiu. There are no trains or public busses running this route, so the best way to visit is by hiring a car. The road is winding and has a reasonable amount of cars, we found it ‘safe enough’ (as long as you don’t overtake on blind corners like some Romanian drivers).
Is the Transfagarasan Highway worth visiting?
YES! We loved out visit! However we would recommend checking the weather (not a lot of shelter if raining and far less picturesque), be prepared from some crazy drivers, and perhaps arrive/leave after ‘peak times’ (likely early morning or late afternoon). Be prepared to take lots of photos, and take our advice and wander ‘off the paths’ into the stunning valleys.
