Ponta do Sol is a hidden gem town on Madeira.. you should add it to your list!

Ponta do Sol hidden gem town Madeira portugal road trip

The island of Madeira is full of gems, some well known, and some a bit more ‘off the radar’. We visited for a week over summer, spending the days road tripping around this incredible island. One of the hidden gems we visited was the charming beachside town of Ponta do Sol. Located on the southern side of the island, around 30 minutes from Funchal, we think this town should be added to your list!

Read on to see some beautiful shots of the town, and a couple of things we think you shouldn’t miss when you visit Ponta do Sol.

Relax at the Ponta do Sol beach

The town is perched adjacent to a small bay, meaning the beach is calm.. and picturesque. It’s easy to spend your day relaxing on the beach, or under one of the sunshades on the beach. There is also a few cafés an restaurants along the promenade that are great for a drink or something to eat!

Walk up to the waterfall over the road – Cascata dos Anjos

This is a little hidden gem of Madeira. The waterfall flows down from the cliff above and right onto the road below. You can walk or run underneath it, and it’s such a unique phenomenon. Located around 20-30 minutes walking from the town and beach, it’s easy to reach and a must do when you visit Ponta do Sol. Ignore what Google Maps says and walk east along the beachside road to reach the picturesque falls. If you want this to yourself, head there early in the day.

Cliff jump off the pier

At the edge of the Ponta do Sol harbour is a little pier. It’s the perfect spot to walk down and capture photos of the town, but it also makes an excellent location to cliff jump. You know Ky loves a little cliff jumping, and of course he jumped into the crystal clear water.

Want to stay in Ponta do Sol?

If you’re looking to relax away from the crowds by the beach, Ponta do Sol might be the perfect little town to spend a few nights. The beach is gorgeous, there’s restaurants around, plus it’s close to Funchal and other towns. See some Ponta do Sol accommodation here.
