Unsure if you should do the PR8 Hike on Madeira – Here’s a few things to know!

should i do the PR8 hike madeira thing to know guide

Madeira is a tropical paradise, and a hikers dream destination! Filled with a plethora of hikes at varied levels, including waterfall trails, levada hikes (trails along Madeiran aqueducts), short hikes to amazing views, paths that snake along windswept cliffs, and of course.. the famous PR1 hike you’ve seen on Instagram/TikTok. While many people plan their trip around the PR1 hike (and for good reason), the PR8 hike should also be on your list as another MUST DO hike on Madeira.

The PR8 Hike (Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço) is located on the most eastern point of Madeira. Offering sweeping views of the ocean below, narrow trails winding through jagged rocky cliffs. Ky did the hike with mate Tim during their week long visit to the island and they absolutely loved it! Read on for highlights, tips and our guide things you need to know before you do the PR8 hike!

The PR8 hike scenery is very different than that of the other hikes on the island.. rather than lush greenery (e.g. PR9, PR11, Sao Vicente Chapel hike etc) or mountaintop trails (e.g. PR1), the PR8 trail has ochre red, exposed, windswept cliffs. A narrow trail winds along the cliff and you get views of the blue Atlantic Oceans either side of the hiking path. The hike isn’t hard, but definitely has some stairs and incline, including some uneven ground on the final ascent.

A few things to know when doing the PR8 hike in Madeira

  • What distance is the PR8 hike Madeira? The trail is about 7kms round trip (just of 3km each way), and has about 300m of elevation.
  • How long will it take to do the PR8 hike Madeira: The hike will take between 2-4 hours (we did it in under 3 hours with photo and snack breaks, but some would take at least 3-4 hours).
  • How to get to the PR8 hike Madeira: You will need to either drive with a hire car, or organize a private taxi/transfer to the trailhead.
  • What equipment do I need for the PR8 hike: Hiking shoes are a must, especially due to the worn trail at the end of the hike (see below). Suncreen/sun protection is also a must as the trail is very exposed to the elements. Bring enough water and snacks, as there is only one stopping point at the end of the trail.
  • Are there any facilities at the PR8 hike: Yes! There is the Casa do Sardinha café located around 1.5-2 hours into the hike. It has food, drinks and bathroom facilities (you have to pay).
  • Does the PR8 hike cost? Yes.. you need to pay a small 1 euro entry fee, paid via QR code at the entrance to the hike.
  • Are there any beaches on the PR8 hike? There are! There are a few very picturesque little coves, particularly Praia do Sardinha and Sao Lourenco Beach. There is a boat tour taking you to Praia do Sardinha, so you may be able to organize to do the hike only one way and have a swim. Otherwise, be prepared that the beach is about 2 hours from the starting point.
  • Is the PR8 hike easier than the PR1 hike? Yes! The PR8 hike is a moderate level hike, while the PR1 is more of a moderate-hard hike. This is reflected in the total distance, time and include (see above).
  • Is the PR8 hike safe? Generally yes, very safe. However, the final part of the hike up to Miradouro Ponta do Furado has a well worn trial, the stairs have broken, and the trail is definitely a lot more challenging. Additionally, the wire railings are damaged and can easily cut your hands. If you are aware of these, then it is ok, but definitely makes the last part of the hike harder and is something the Madiera national parks should look to fix. The only other risks will be standard hiking related injuries, dehydration, fitness etc.
  • Does the PR8 hike get busy? Yes, it definitely can! It is one of the most popular hikes outside of the PR1 hike, so be prepared that you may have to park a few 100m down on the road and walk up to the trail. However, if you do the hike in the mid-afternoon you will likely find it much quieter than in the earlier morning.
  • Is the PR8 hike a must do when you visit Madeira? Yes, we think so! It has unique views, and it is easy to do in the morning or afternoon (not the full day like PR1).
  • Where are the best views on the PR8 Hike? The whole trail is incredibly beautiful, however we found the 2 best views were Miradouro de Sao Lourenco and Miradouro Ponta do Furado. PR8 also has it’s own mini ‘stairway to heaven’ around 2/3 of the way into the hike.. so get the cameras ready!
