should i visit olomouc prague day trip czech republic hidden gem main square

Have you heard about the little hidden gem in the Czech Republic called Olomouc? If you answer no, we wouldn’t be surprised.. it’s definitely off the tourist radar for most people. However, this guide will hopefully illuminate Olomouc as an excellent destination to consider. Located in the east of the Czech Republic, this small uni town came onto Ky’s radar when researching his travels through the region. There wasn’t that much online about Olomouc, which can either be a good thing (it’s underrated!) or a worrying sign (it’s not worth visiting). Thankfully, taking a chance on a one night stay in Olomouc was definitely worth it! Imagine a quaint, quiet, affordable little historic town free of tourists. The main square and old town was very  picturesque, and the café’s and restaurants also excellent. Read on to see some of the best things to do on your visit to Olomouc.

A few of the best things to do in Olomouc

Olomouc is a small town, meaning there’s not as much to do as some of the bigger cities. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit. In fact, some of the highlights, like the main square, are very impressive!

Visit the Olomouc main squares

Yes.. there’s 2 main squares! The Upper Square (Horní náměstí) and Lower Square (Dolní náměstí). Both are very impressive and surprising in such a small town. You will also likely see the historic Olomouc Town Hall and beautiful Olomouc Astronomical Clock in the main square.

Both are a must see and add to the spectacle of the main square in Olomouc. There’s a number of bars, restaurants and cafes around the squares, and while some are touristy, there’s also some good options, especially in the Lower Square. Either way, the view from all of them are excellent.

Check out the churches and cathedrals

Like most impressive old European towns, there’s always a cathedral or church (if not many). Olomouc has a few, with the 2 most impressive listed below.

  • Cathedrals Inc Saint Wenceslas Cathedral
  • Church of Our Lady of the Snows

Walk down the Olomouc Covered Street (Duhové větrníky)

Situated in an alleyway off the Upper Main Square, Duhové větrníky is a beautiful street covered with little colourful flower like objects. It’s a unique street and definitely worth walking along.

Relax or walk through Smetana’s Gardens

Situated on the edge of the old town, this is a beautiful park and well worth a walk through. In summer the locals relax here and just enjoy the vibe.

Walk through the painted walkway – Lomená gallery

This is a unique little bit of street art in the old town. You can walk through the covered passage which has been painted. It’s definitely something to add onto the Olomouc itinerary.

Walk or ride along the Morava River (Nábřeží Josefa Jařaba)

The Morava River runs by Olomouc, and there’s a lovely walking and bike track which follows the river. It’s a great spot for a run, or hire a bike and cycle along.

Enjoy some of the great coffee in Olomouc

Like most of the Czech Republic, the coffee culture is excellent. Olomouc has numerous great cafes, with the Long Story Short Cooking Bar Café a must. Home to a gorgeous courtyard, excellent coffee and good food, don’t miss this place! Here were a few more that we recommend:

  • TRAFFIC COFFEE!
  • Cafe Jan
  • Café na cucky – on main square
  • Café La Fée
  • Fresh Jazz Cafe
  • Long Story Short Cooking Bar Café

Try some good food in Olomouc

There were a lot of good restaurants and cafes in Olomouc, however we didn’t get a chance to try that much. The list below are a few good options of varying cuisines.

  • Long Story Short Cooking Bar Café
  • Drapal Restaurant
  • Saint Venceslav’s Brewery
  • Cà Phê District OL
  • Letbak bar

How long should you stay in Olomouc

Olomouc is definitely worth visiting, however it is small, so you don’t need that long. There are lots of good food/cafes but minimal ‘attractions outside of the charming old town. Olomouc is perfect for a day trip or a 1 night stay. See a few accommodation options below..
