Moments in Melbourne from a slow start to 2026 (+ travel plans)

melbourne things to do guide

Our 2026 has be joyful with the arrival of little Luca (our babycino!). It has also meant a slow start to the year with work and travel. However, in true ‘2 Cups of Travel’ style, we have been getting out for day trips, and have booked in some of our next trips! Check out a few of the places and trips we have enjoyed to start the year, and our travel plans at then end of the article! A few moments from Melbourne recently..

Mornington Peninsula day trips!

We regularly visit the Peninsula, home to Ky’s family and many friends. Summer is the perfect time to check out the beaches, the coastal towns, and the wineries. We also ventured to one of our friend’s new event spaces and hospitality venues, Derril, located in Moorooduc (highly recommend, great coffee and food!). We always recommend the Mornington Peninsula (here’s our day trip guide for the peninsula).

Walking and running around the Melbourne F1 Grand Prix track

For a few weeks in Melbourne, you can walk/run/cycle around the Australian Grand Prix track (typically first few weeks of Feb, before 23rd Feb). We live close-enough to the Albert Park Lake track, and have had multiple walks and runs around the course. It’s a unique experience and definitely helps you get a little bit of extra “speed” in your run reps.

Melbourne CBD Day Trips

Nothing like being a tourist in your own city! We love exploring Melbourne, the laneways, trying new coffee shops, and sitting in the parks to people watch. While Melbourne lacks some “wow factor” of many big cities around the world, it makes up for this with great cuisine, opportunities to experience the culture, and lots to eat/see/do! See our coffee guide to Melbourne here, and our detailed guide to Melbourne here!

A visit to our ‘OG’ favourite restaurant in Melbourne

On our first ‘date night’ away from little Luca, we returned to our original ‘favourite restaurant’ in Melbourne, La Tortilleria in Kensington. While it may not be out regular haunt or top pick these days, it is nostalgic and still one of our favourite places for Mexican food in Melbourne!

A road trip to the yarra valley!

The Yarra Valley is only 1.5 hours from the CBD, and home to some of Melbourne’s (and Australia’s) best wineries. We took Luca on one of his first little road trips out to the Yarra Valley, meeting friends and sampling a few vinos on a lovely summers day!

Summer sunrises looking at hot air balloons over the CBD

Summer sunrises in Melbourne can be varied, but when they explode with colour, with the expectation of a hot day, and combined with the unique phenomenon that is the hot air balloons.. it’s magical. Witnessing this with Luca.. even more special!

2026 Travel Plans..

These are loading, and some still in the works, however the current plans involve..

  • Tasmania: an early 2026 trip to Tassie, one part of Australia we have often wanted to visit, but haven’t as yet! We are excited for some day trips, relaxing in nature, a few small hikes, and lots of good Tassie cuisine!
  • New Zealand: this isn’t confirmed.. however we are looking to try and squeeze a little NZ trip in this year! The Fjordland national park is calling our name!
  • Europe in December: yes.. a little random with the winter visit, however Ky has got a place in the Valencia Marathon, and therefore a visit to Valencia, and then other Europe destinations, are on the cards!
