A day trip to Borobudur Temple in Java, Indonesia

Is Borobudur Temple worth visiting indonesia java things to do guide

The recent 2 Cups of Travel visit overseas came when Ky received an invitation to present at an international sports medicine conference in Surakata, Central Java (see more about Ky’s presentation and conference here). We love overseas adventures, and despite the busy personal and professional workload, this was a great career opportunity for Ky, and also a platform for some more Indonesian adventures. We have previously explored around Bali, the Nusa Islands, and Gili Islands, but further Indonesian adventures have been high on our list. Enter a brief visit to Java. The photos below show a few highlights from Ky’s conference visit and presentation!

After the “work” part of the trip was complete, there was time to add in a visit to one of Indonesia’s most impressive cultural sites, the 1200+ year old Borobudur Temple. The pictures below struggle to do the place justice.

Known as the largest Buddhist temple in the world, this site is home of over 500 Buddha statues, and rises over 35 metres high. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the location has been well preserved in a park, with tours, and restricted access to certain times of the day/amount of people at one time.

Is Borobudur Temple worth visiting? While this site is often difficult to reach (2-4 hours away from other major towns), the site is seriously impressive, and holds great cultural significance. The sheer age, size and ability to walk onto and through the temple makes it well worth the visit. However, be prepared to spend a bit of time in the car or transport. We recommend adding on some time nearby visiting local sites, rice fields or small towns nearby.
