Budapest is the ‘medieval feel’ central European city that should be high on your list. Bursting with culture (think ruin bar, boutique shops, cuisine etc), excellent cafe scene, great views, and lots to do.. we have visited the Hungarian capital multiple times, and it never fails to deliver. When visiting Budapest, one of the must do attractions is paying a visit to Fisherman’s Bastion. This will deliver those views you have seen on your social media feeds. Think ‘fairytale castle’ turrets with views of the iconic Hungarian Parliament Building and Danube River. Due to the popularity of this location, there’s a few things you should know.
A few things to know when visiting Fisherman’s Bastion in Budapest
- Where is Fisherman’s Bastion? Located on the ‘Buda’ side of the river, this impressive location is near the Buda Castle.
- What is it? These turrets and walls are UNESCO heritage listed, and form part of the old castle walls, built in the 1700s.
- How long does it take to get to Fisherman’s Bastion from the ‘Pest’ side of Budapest? A short 15-30min walk across the Széchenyi Chain Bridge will have you at the iconic Fishermans Bastion.
- Why should you visit Fisherman’s Bastion? Simply.. the views! We think this is the best view in Budapest.
- What time should you visit Fisherman’s Bastion? Ideally, early! You can visit for sunrise if you want to beat the crowds and have the place to yourself, however if you want to have it much quieter, aim for around of before 8am. The closer you get to 9.30-10am, the more crowds and then the tours will begin to roll in. It doesn’t get as busy as many locations in Western Europe, but you’ll still struggle to get that ‘postcard shot’ you’ve been hoping for.
- Add on a visit to the Buda Castle, the Buda riverside and explore the rest of the area while you are there.

Ky visited Budapest in the summer of 2024 with his good mate Tim for a whirlwind 24hours. Ky and Tess have also visited for a few days in 2022. It’s a city we enjoy, and definitely somewhere can see ourselves returning to!
