Should I visit Warsaw or Krakow? Poland travel guide.

Should I visit Warsaw old town history or Krakow Poland travel guide

When researching the eastern European destination of Poland the cities of Warsaw and Krakow loom large on your radar. While your itinerary might look to include both of Poland’s big cities, if you are weighing up if you should visit Warsaw OR Krakow, take a read of our thoughts below. By the end of the article, you should have a clear view on our impression!

Why should you visit Warsaw?

Warsaw is filled with history, particularly from WW2, with this evident in the museums and the city today. However, while partially rebuilt, more than 85% of Warsaw was destroyed in the 1940s, meaning the ‘old town’ part of the city is quite small. This modern city is the largest in Poland, home to large economic and business centres, plus the ‘new town’ regions of Warsaw are home to excellent cafes, lots of cafes and a plethora of museums. Warsaw isn’t as picturesque as some other Polish cities, so keep this in mind when you are considering visiting. We definitely recommend you visit the Warsaw old town, along with Srodmiescie Polundniowe, a trendy region that has a multitude of art nouveau buildings, cafes, bistros and boutique stores.

Why should you visit Krakow?

The southern Polish city of Krakow is the country’s second largest. A walled old town is filled with history and atmosphere, while the nearby suburbs, including the Krakow Jewish Quarter and the riverside promenade, are must visit areas. Krakow has an excellent café scene, good food and street markets, great street art, and the city is vibrant especially in summer. The city is relatively picturesque (much more than Warsaw), and there’s a lot to do, including history, day trips and attractions in the town. Krakow is also located close to Polish must visit day trips Auschwitz and Wieliczka Salt Mine (much closer than Warsaw). Krakow is also within touching distance of the Czech Republic and mountainous region Zakopane. See our Krakow guide here!

So should you visit
Warsaw or Krakow?

If you have to choose one, definitely pick Krakow. Not only is Krakow more picturesque, it has a larger old town, better regions nearby the old town, and it is also much better located for popular day trips to historical sites and the mountains. While you may look to include both regions in your Poland itinerary, Krakow is a must visit and one of the underrated cities in Europe (in our opinion).
